Good read hamish,

I think it's about time the AFL insists on all matches being broadcast live, all around Australia.

All of the commercial networks now have several channels, so there is plenty of capacity to go live. As for live broadcasting affecting the ground attendances, the minuscule loss in possible dollars would be more than recuperated through other potential benefits.

I understand that from a network perspective that for example having Friday night footy on delay is beneficial, e.g. BH&G rates extremely well and that the delayed telecast finishing later maintains a greater audience until later on in the night.

But it’s just not good enough anymore. I love watching AFL, have for years and used to watch 4 or 5 games on TV every weekend. However I rarely watch Friday night footy on the telly anymore as I am following the game & scores on radio and twitter, not to mention how my Supercoach/DreamTeam players are going!

Surely it can’t be good that dedicated AFL fans like me are not watching footy only because it is not on live?

It's a double edged sword sometimes.

At the NBL, its usually a 50/50 split to those who want online updates or not.

Should there be a delay in broadcast, some cases fans find ways of streaming the game live and then share it around.

In general, people are able consume the "live" updates many ways other than TV. Be it online stats, twitter, facebook etc. Updates are posted at both league and club level.

Live fan engagement brings another element to the sport being televised(or not), ranging from "twitpics" at the game, or fan commentary via facebook or twitter.

Cheers

Great post Hamish.

It's funny, this time last year I think fans were happy to wait for their TV coverage and thus didnt want live fan engagement, but in just 12 months the landscape has change and their demand for live news is insatiable.

Working at Richmond over our first 4 games this yaer, all have been on delay on TV and not once have we had people ask us to stop giving live updates on social media, and infact some even tell us we are their only source of live scores and enjoy the updates.

Cheers

Agree with sport being a real social medium in society and as I made a comment in my own blog recently regarding sport fan engagement that the success of a sport comes down to the fans and how passionate and engaged they are.

Seems like the GS Warriors are leading the social experience to their advantage.
